Training session to focus on changes in Iowa

The Benton-Iowa Decat Board will host Dr. Mark Grey who will present on Iowa’s population which is changing in ways that could not have been foreseen even five years ago. We are experiencing unprecedented growth in the size and diversity of newcomer populations. This presentation provides an overview of critical demographic trends in Iowa and the key challenges as well as opportunities for communities, social service providers, medical professionals and law enforcement.

Trick-or-Treat hours set for Oct. 31 for residences, care facilities

Traditional Halloween Trick-or Treat hours for Vinton families at area residents and care facilities have been set for 5-7 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 31. In addition to visiting many area homes to receive treats, children are invited to visit the Virginia Gay Hospital Nursing and Rehab Center, the Vinton Lutheran Home and Windsor Manor, where staff and residents will await them.

VPRD: Calling all resident Monsters and Ghouls!

Some of the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department’s facilities will be undergoing some haunting changes in the next week in celebration of Halloween and needs your help! Friday, October 30th the miniature golf course will be crawling with things that go bump in the night at the annual Ghostly Glow Mini Golf. Participants will have the opportunity to golf on the nine hole mini golf course at the Vinton Skate & Activity Center from 7 to 9 PM.

Reminder: Scratch Cupcake delivery at Friends of the Shelter on Friday

All Scratch Cupcakes will be delivered to the Friends of the Shelter adoption center TOMORROW (Friday, 10/23). They will be available for pick up between 3:30-5:30 at 211 west 4th street, Vinton.   Please email us with any questions!!   Once again, thank you for helping make our fundraiser a success.

Playing for a Cure: Bingo set for this Sunday, Oct. 25

Koozies & ribbons are for sale at Ehlinger's Vinton Express to raise funds to fight breast cancer. A new fund-raising effort to help raise money for the fight against breast cancer has been set for Oct. 25. Playing for a Cure, a Bingo and bake sale event, will take place at Vinton-Shellsburg High School on Sunday, Oct. 25. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. ; Bingo games will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets for Bingo are $10 before Oct. 18, $15 at the door, or $5 for children 12 and under.

Presbyterian Church to host chalk artist, Oct. 25

Drawing Closer Ministries, featuring chalk artist and Bible teacher Randy Davis of Ottumwa, will be the guest at the Vinton Presbyterian Church, 608 First Ave., at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. Prior to to the drawing, Davis uses a unique visual method to convey Biblical principles and how they can be applied to modern-day living. A stunning chalk drawing concludes the presentation which is enhanced by colored lights and special black light effects revealing a previously drawn “hidden” picture.

PEO Chapter MZ and HG joint brunch October 24

PEO Chapters MZ and HG will have a joint Founder's Day brunch at 9 AM, Oct. 24, at Windsor Manor.  Brenda Hackbarth will present the program.

Veterans Benefit Pancake Breakfast

On November 7, 2015 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter will be hosting a Veterans Benefit Pancake Breakfast, to support local Veterans. The breakfast will be held at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School cafeteria at 7 am-11 am. The meal will include sausage links, eggs, coffee, orange juice, milk and of course pancakes! This Pancake Breakfast is open to any one who wishes to come and it will be a free will donation with all proceeds going to the Benton County Veterans Assistance Program.

Health and Wellness Fair set for Saturday, October 17

Join us this Saturday from 8:30 – 11:30 am at the Vinton Skate & Activity Center for the 2nd Annual Benton County Community Health & Wellness Fair. There is no admission fee and you are welcome to stay as long as you wish. There will be prize sign-ups and lots of interesting, informative material and activities for all ages, youth to seniors.

Tailgate party planned for VSMS students Friday

This Friday, the Above The Influence Coalition will be holding a football tailgate for students at the Middle School.  During this even we will have music provided by Tyler Henkle, free hotdogs off the grill, deserts and some games out on the lawn.  This event is open to anyone who wants to come have some fun before the start of our Homecoming football game.
